Cycling in Pelham, it's where the hills are.

Change Your Ride, Change Your View — Discover Cycling Around Pelham and Henry of Pelham Winery

Ready for a ride with a little more character? While our local trails along the Welland Canal are a favourite for their gentle, mostly flat terrain, there’s a different kind of adventure waiting just a few kilometers away—one with rolling hills, scenic vineyards, and rewarding climbs.

For an easy cruise, the canal path is ideal. It’s accessible and low-difficulty, perfect for casual riders and families. But experienced cyclists can stretch the journey: head north into St. Catharines and loop back using the complimentary ferry for a rewarding 99 km ride, or venture south and return via ferry for an 89 km route. Smooth, scenic, and satisfying.

Craving a change in scenery and elevation? Set your sights on Pelham. This area offers a beautiful blend of countryside roads, gentle rollers, and the kind of climbs that make the descents even sweeter. While most riding is done on-road, many routes are shared with low-traffic vehicles, and a few have dedicated bike lanes. You can plan your ride easily using apps like Strava, BikeMap, or Google Maps—or check out the town’s cycling guide here: Pelham Cycling Routes

One route I enjoy taking, as I don’t use the apps, is Effingham Street—perfect for those who want a scenic workout with nice home views and hills. From the hotel, take the canal trail north to Lincoln Street, turn left onto Lincoln, follow through 3 sets of lights, and then right onto Effingham. (There will be a sign for the airport on the left). This ride is about 10 km each way, but don’t be fooled by the short distance—just past Tice Road, you’ll face a steep downhill that’s thrilling on the way down and challenging on the return.

Near the crest of the route is Henry of Pelham Winery—a picturesque stop where you can relax and enjoy estate wines, a cozy bistro patio, and views of the surrounding vineyards. It’s a great mid-ride reward or a perfect destination in itself.

Don’t forget—safety first. Always wear your helmet, turn on your bike lights, and follow the rules of the road.

Wherever your ride takes you—canal-side or vineyard-bound—we hope the journey is as enjoyable as the destination.
