The Off Season

  • October 12, 2018

When the leaves start changing colors, we start to come to realization that we are moving into the ‘off season’ of the tourism business, but don’t be fooled; it is still a great time of year to visit Niagara.

There are not as many special events to choose from, but there are still some great events at Gretzky winery, Peller Estates Winery and Jackson Triggs Winery to name a few.  (http://wineriesofniagaraonthelake.com/tours-events__trashed/all-events/) The Cascades of Fire International Fireworks Competition, a synchronized fireworks display takes place over 6weekends in November (https://www.cliftonhill.com/events/niagara-falls-fireworks) along with the start of the Winter Festival of Lights (https://wfol.com/)

I know all these events are not in Welland, so if you would like to stay local, I like these permanent attractions in Welland.  The Chippewa Park Leon Monument which is a life size living room setting in honor of Mr. Leon of Leon’s furniture.  The Welland museum is a great place to visit, with a great kids section.  Exhibits change regularly and admission is by donation. Check the website for current exhibit information and hours, http://www.wellandmuseum.ca/.

My third recommendation is the legacy project. In 2015, Welland hosted the Pan American games for the sports of Canoe & Kayak, and with that came the legacy attractions of Canoe’s placed strategically throughout the city. All painted by local artists, these canoe’s add a touch of beautiful outdoor art.  I’ll write about outdoor art next week.  Unfortunately there is no website just for the canoe’s so they are located in these approximate locations: Wellness Centre, Dog Park, WIFC, Welland Musuem, Canal Terrace, Market Square, Merrit Island, City Hall, Seaway Mall.
